About this deal

Below are an example from each story – note some of the improvement can only be appreciated when viewing the video in motion; these images demonstrate the decreased screen area on the generally better BD restoration. Broadcast in 1971, Season 8 of Doctor Who saw some subtle refinements to the gritty new format established for third Doctor Jon Pertwee the previous year.

Season 7 had adopted a more mature Quatermass-like style for its four serials but producer Barry Letts and script editor Terrance Dicks, not hugely comfortable with the ‘Earth exile’ scenario imposed upon the series as it entered a new decade, began to tinker with the formula in an attempt to skew it back to a more inclusive family audience. I’d also like Katy to do behind the Sofa either 7 or 11 so that we can see our thoughts on some of Jon’s non Katy stories. Author of a book chronicling the history of Doctor Who exhibitions available now from Telos Publishing. If you are so inclined then the full studio recording session is also available to watch at your leisure.

The script is a little thin on the ground and, as I mentioned earlier, is essentially a remake of Spearhead from Space with added bells and whistles. I sent pics of the booklet and links to youtube unboxing that shows the issue again today and see if they respond this time. Blue Peter - From November 1971 , a visit to the Television Centre scenery block and a look at scenery items being sold by the BBC - see if you can spot the Doctor Who doors! Even best case scenario this range is going to be going on until well past the middle of the decade, it would be very short sighted to drop a Troughton release now knowing the animation team are focusing on that era. Looked at from a modern perspective, the story is quite heavy-handed with the old CSO (colour separation overlay) but it looks as if these sequences have been touched up for the Blu-Ray release, as there are less noticeable fuzzy yellow lines than I seem to remember.Back in the Pirate VHS days that I mentioned earlier, it was one of the first three stories that I got on tape – along with The War Machines and The Talons of Weng Chiang, randomly – and although I’ve always been a fan of Tom Baker’s gothic opus, it was this story that really got to me. There’s an incredible feeling of otherness about it, partly from the incredible design of the Axons and their ship and partly (through sheer serendipity) from the ‘freak weather conditions’, which reduce the depth of field in a lot of shots and give oven outdoor shots an enclosed, claustrophobic feel. The Claws Of Axos sees the aliens The Axons arrive offering to help humanity but The Doctor suspects a trap while The Master is trapped on their spaceship in an excellent 4 part serial.
