About this deal

In a brilliant explanation, magic is the real physics, the real science of the whole universe combined, what applies everywhere yet man is yet to comprehend, as opposed to the physics and science that regulates our galaxy alone and none other. The players take the roles of Investigators unraveling mysteries, eliminating threats while slowly coming into contact with the incomprehensible powers of their adversaries.

Critical successes and Fumbles do exist (1% and 96-100% depending on the target number, respectively). Not to say that the Keepers Rulebook was confusing, but the style was a bit wordy (much like Lovecraft himself), while the Starter Set was a bit more concise. Within strange and forgotten tomes of lore you discover revelations that humanity was not meant to know. The art is alive, modern yet familiar, horrifying yet mesmerizing; it is definitely a departure from the more trippy and surreal elements of previous editions. Those who do not feel inspired however have access to tables which can be used either on the basis of choice or randomly. An additional three page table with all the tomes gathered in one place facilitates enormously when it comes to who wrote what, where, in what language, and what its game effects are.

I've tried it on multiple devices and with multiple apps on my tablet (where I prefer reading RPG books), and even if I download the file, it seems every time I open it to read, it has to refresh or reformulate the images and text. Finally, combined Skill Rolls allow the player to roll against two different skills in a single cast of the dice; whether success in one (and which) or both the skills is needed, is for the Keeper to know. Included are two scenarios that are ready to run, but also show you two very different approaches to building a scenario for this style of game. Not letting that same mechanic slip into combat on the other hand is a very obvious choice, so bonus points for that. The content of course is fantastic as well, as long as you enjoy skill-based games with high levels of player danger and a reduced focus on combat.I am a big fan of the new bonus/penalty dice mechanic that effectively lets you roll two tens dice in one go.

Everything is done very professionally with this company and always lets you know every step of the process. I cracked mine open and removed all the extra images in the background of each page that aren't even viewable. Optional rules enable players to spend Luck points to turn failed Skill rolls into successes, and to increase Luck in the same way as Skills.I cheered for Luck playing a more prominent role and giving players another option to influence their die rolls, even though this is only an optional rule. The latest 'replacement' has a huge, rectangular oil stain or mark in the middle of the front cover. Should I end up running a scenario with a chase scene, I might hack the rules a bit to make things a bit more interesting.
