Here we go! Back from Canada, a few gigs in Scotland’s been had and now off again to wonderful Norway! We had a blast at the AMC in Edinburgh as part of the festival, thanks to all who came! A special thanks to Caroline Read too:). Now we’re starting to fill our suitcases for our trip that starts tomorrow afternoon. First stop is Nordsjøfestivalen Sailor’s wake, where we will be playing over the weekend. We’re looking forward to see new and old friends there, think it’ll be a hoot! Some fantastic line-up they hav ethis year, with Aasmund Nordstoga, Väsen, Annbjørg Lien, Kevin Henderson and many others. After a funfilled festival weekend we take the train up through Norway, Norways most beautiful trainjourney! Up to Valldal and Anne Sofie’s homeground. There we will be doing 4 concerts, and we even managed to squeese in 2 days off for frolicking and fun! There’s talk of white water rafting, sea kayaking, mountain walks, late night lake swimming and overnight stays on mountain farms. We like our job! We promise to update you all with pictures, and some tales of what we’ve been doing along the way. You can also find pictures from our Canada-tour on our new Facebook page, and here you can also leave comments or just say hi to us:) Right, off to pack!

Hi all! Hope you’re all enjoying the summer, even in Norway where reliable sources tells me the summer is still on it’s way..! We’re now awaiting our brand new cd, it’s being mastered as I type. We’re now getting relaxed enough now that the cd is on it’s way, to start thinking about this great adventure we’re about to embark on. We’re going to Canada! Need a coffee almost every time I think about it, so that I can sit down and relish the thought! Sunglasses are safe ( from a certain mountain trip the other day), passports are checked and contracts signed. We promise to do our best to give you updates on the way, I know at least two of the Fribo-members have planned to go see some orcas up close, and I know at least one other member that wouldn’t mind a trip in a seaplane. Wouldn’t mind at all, at all….Some of our friends are also going to do some music-frolicking at the same time, so no doubt we’ll get together an have a good laugh for the next month!
We’re also going to Norway in August and September, but more of that later. Now – coffee.

Why? – Because we’re going to Canada in July! We’re now just starting to get on top of the paper pile that’s been accumulating for this trip, and can now slowly start to get excited about the thought of 3 weeks in lovely Canada. First stop is Vancouver Island Fest, then Vancouver Folk Music Fest and to finish it all off we play at Calgary Folk Fest. What a joy! And who knows what we’ll be up to in between these festivals? I know Orca – spotting is on the cards, more gigs, and I know I’m taking with me a message to someone who’ll be at Calgary. The lovely and unforgettable Foghorn String band told me to look out for some of their friends when in Calgary, and say hi. So that’s on my agenda. I’ve also heard rumors about a must-go-eat-restaurant on Commercial street on Vancouver Island, and I think maybe some sunshine will also be had – hence the sunglasses buy. But that’s not all – Fribo’s brand new CD is about to be completed!! We’re very excited about this, in many ways:) On it we’ve got some truly amazing musicians, whom you should all go and check out for yourselves, they’re a fantastic bunch and very talented. Magnus Lundmark from Sweden’s kick-ass percussion, Naomi Harvey on the Gaelic is doing some marvelous stuff, as always, Jon Bews is doing some breathtaking stringparts. Ailig Hunter is once again proving he’s the master of bass playing, Signy Jakobsdottir is making some incredible music on her kit and the rest of us – well, we do our best. Angus Lyon desperately tried to get some accordion on this one, but instead ended up having the control of the sounds and production, and also showed us how to manage transformers. Although we have to go back for more sessions on that bit..Now with the cd almost finished, we’re booking a tour for our cd-release in Norway in September, more news about that and more tours later. If someone would like to have a wee listen to some of our new material you can go to our myspace page, or else this website will have them listenable in not too long. We wish you all a great week ahead, and go out and enjoy the sunshine as much as you can. We are, as we’re preparing ourselves for a tad warmer weather than this….Fribo ( Anne Sofie ), 31. May 2010.

We had a great time a made some new friends…

The Scotsman 26 January 2009

Celtic Connections: Enjoying many happy returns

NU-NORDIC NIGHT
***
STRATHCLYDE SUITE, GLASGOW ROYAL CONCERT HALL

CURATED by Ewan MacPherson of the Edinburgh-based Fribo, this lively showcase sought to awaken its audience to the cross-pollination and ongoing vivacity of the Nordic tradition.

Fribo’s Sarah-Jane Summers accompanied Annlaug Borsheim on fiddle and Californian folk-classical cellist Barry Phillips for a liltingly graceful introduction, before UK-Scandinavian five-piece Baltic Crossing presented a Schottish set from Finland and Norway and a Finnish quadrille entitled Space Cowboy.

On guitar and nyckelharpa (part hurdy-gurdy, part violin), Ian Carr and Niklas Roswall picked up the polska tradition, including the punchy, irregular Gahn Blenk!.

Finally Fribo, augmented by Borsheim, the flute of Silje Hegg and Gaelic singer Naomi Harvey, plus Anne Sofie Linge Valdal’s vocals, gave an all-too-brief taste of their eclectic sound, before a mass encore by the entire ensemble.

JAY RICHARDSON

Hello all you summery people! Fribo has been not too impressed with the recent rain in Scotland but has been happily doing some really fun gigs!

Womad went really well, we performed on the Radio 3 Stage at 6:30 on the Friday night to a good crowd, the show was presented by the lovely Mary-Anne Kennedy and broadcast on Late Junction plus the Beat on the World Service. We’ll put some excerpts up on our Myspace page soon for those who missed it. We were also slightly suprised to be interviewed on Al Jazeera TV but have no idea when that will be available to watch…

We followed that up with a very enjoyable gig on the fringe as part of Edinburgh’s massive festival, apparently numbers are down this year due to the fuel crisis/recession but we haven’t noticed! The buses are still full here.. The gig was in the Acoustic Music Centre at St Brides run by Stoneyport Agency and we performed our second show with Icelandic Glaswegian Signy Jacobsdottir our other percussionist who has a very melodic approach to her playing which we love.

We are just back today from Stonehaven Folk Club where we had our first full-length gig in ages, Trudi Clayton runs a very welcoming venue the Haugh Hotel and we really enjoyed playing a gig with almost no volume on the P.A as the room is small enough to not need it.

In other news Fribo’s track ‘Gamle Guldbrand’ on the brand new CD ‘The Royal Oak – Best of Folk’ (MPM16972) on Magic Park Records has just been released, the track is rubbing shoulders with other Edinburgh luminaries such as: Aberfeldy, Ross Galloway, Ewen Forfar and Kris Drever & Sera McFadyen. It will also be on our Myspace page in a minute..

We’re now looking forward to our next Norwegian tour coming up in 3 weeks!! Will let you know how it goes if we don’t see you there!

Look out for Sarah-Jane’s new CD ‘Nesta’ too it’s a beaut: www.myspace.com/sarahjanesummers1

Also coming up in the next few months will be a Nu-Nordic website with news and info about this exciting new scene. keep you eyes peeled.

Cheers

Welcome to May! After a fantastic trip to New York where we met some lovely people (and got a terrible flu!) we now have an agent in the form of the lovely Sandra Peevers of On Queue Artists, look out America we’ll be there next year..

We were lucky enough to be able to record our Celtic Connections show on DVD, it was a packed house in the Classic Grand so we hope to see the final results in the next few weeks, watch this space!

We also were recorded performing live on Global Gathering one night at the BBC in Glasgow you can listen to the show here:

Scroll down to ‘Global Gathering 29th Jan’

http://www.bbc.co.uk/scotland/music/celticconnections/av/index.shtml

So a busy year ahead ending up in the Netherlands, Germany and hopefully Belgium for a few shows, we’ve also got some nice UK gigs, we’ll be taking in Edinburgh Fringe, Hexham, Woodend Barn and the big highland festival Blas.

There is also talk of a new album as it has been two years since we recorded our first, wow how time flies! We’ll keep you posted on this one too.

Have a great summer.
